Games Don't Kill People

Thanks to this wonderful thing called the internet I can express my opinions on any given subject at it will be their for the world to debate.

This particular matter is something that has always annoyed me and its time to throw my thoughts into the ring. Violent games do not make violent people.

Games have been one of many scapegoats that people and organisations have used to avoid speaking about the real issues. The frequent offenders include the national rifle association as well as ill informed parents and political powers in various areas of the world. They believe that games have brainwashed kids and teenagers into thugs and murders and the industry is to blame.

Well, I am a long time gamer. My body count of people and creatures I have shot, stabbed, blown up and set fire to in every game I have ever played will go into possibly hundreds of thousands. Yet I have never thrown a punch in anger. I have never had friend try to recreate any form of violent act they saw in a game. You know why? Because anyone with a healthy mental state can work out the difference between the virtual world they play in and the real world they live in. They have a instilled sense of right and wrong that they were raised to know and stand by.

The same cannot be said for those who come into the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Every shooting I hear especially the attacks on schools in recent times horrify me. They hit me right in the heart knowing that people are capable of such evil deeds, but what angers me is the aftermath when some (not all) people avoid the real issues at hand. They blame games, music, TV and film for the crime... Not the mental state of the man or woman who pulls the trigger nor the easy access to various weapons they use.

Really???

I will happily bet £10 that for every incident that the media point a finger at games, the criminal will have some form of mental issue or poor upbringing. In some cases the criminal will use it as a defense. "It's not my fault your honour. Grand Theft Auto made me shoot those two policemen!"

Banning games for violence is a stupid way to make people feel they will make the world a better place. Well you won't!
Simple.
The industry rates their games appropriately so kids shouldn't be getting a hold of them.
Even when the perpetrator is an adult they should be aloud to get a hold of an assault rifle in the 1st place!

To quote linkin park, "In the end it doesn't really matter." Victims, their family's, politicians and all the shocked onlookers will always look for something or someone to blame. I can understand that. If I had a loved one who was involved in a tragic incident such as this I would want answers. However, the thing to bare in mind is that no movie director, no music artist, no games producer pulled the trigger or sold the gun. The answer problem isn't sitting on shop shelves. It's in the mind of the individual(s) who have no moral compass or sense of right or wrong...

Regardless of what I say people will always have their opinions. I just hope that the entertainment industry doesn't suffer because of a despicable crime and a mobs anger.

The Big Boys of 2013

And so, blog post number 1! Apologies for the long gap as I found myself in a vicious circle in which I would get stuck read what I have written, hate it and then delete it...

For this I'm going to get stuck in and start off with a simple statement.

"BIOSHOCK INFINITE WAS AMAZING!"

Now with that out of my system I can tell you that there is nothing I can add to the already gushing reviews from critics and gamers alike. In short, the gameplay is solid and rewarding the story, art style and characters are truly wonderful and I would highly recommend it to anyone I know... Now, with Bioshock already getting a foothold on the coveted "Sam Swift's Most Awesome Game of the Year" award, I will go through all the announce games we can expect in 2013 that may kick Booker DeWitt and co in the nut sack and steal the award away from them.

Here come the challengers!

Grand Theft Auto V

A bit of background for those of you who have lived in a cave or North Korea. Grand Theft Auto is one of the most well know and recognizable game series in the universe. In most part due to its fantastic gameplay and sandbox formula that cannot be imitated with the same level of quality and maturity (put those dildos down Saints Row!) and in some small way its know for the controversy that follows it with every new game released and I don't think this one to be any different.

What to expect :
  • Plenty of story missions and lots of things on the side to keep you occupied
  • A great script with all kinds of interesting and, in some cases hilarious, characters
  • Quite a number of surprises before it's release in September
  • A few idiotic and ill-informed parents, most likely American, who will blame this game for all the violence in the world... because it has absolutely nothing to do with drugs, gun control or mental health within the society, OH NO NO NO! (A rant for another time)

Company of Heroes 2

Now this one is a bit of an oddity to me as I never played the original (he says while loading steam to buy it). However, I have a funny feeling that this could be a good outside-shot for game of the year, and most likely the bookies favorite for RTS of the year. It's set in one of the most brutal theaters of war, WW2 Soviet Russia. The developers on this were also responsible for the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War series and the original Company of Heroes, which is according to the interwebs, the highest rated RTS of all time... If that isn't a reason to keep an eye out on this in June then I don't know what is!

What to expect :
  • Great mechanics that will keep you on your toes (we don't want soldiers dying from the cold let alone the bullets)
  • A fantastic historical setting to enjoy and experience
  • Dead bodies - Lots of them

Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag

It's hard to believe that this series is only 6 years old and yet they have created 14, YES FOURTEEN, games (including spinoffs and hand helds.) Thankfully the quantity hasn't affected the quality of the main series, which has produced a fascinating take on some of history's most well known people and eras as well as creating one of the most innovative and brilliant forms of multiplayer I have ever seen.  Come November I'll be taking out my enemy's pirate style while encouraging people to sing my new (totally original) song
What shall we do with a drunken gamer,
What shall we do with a drunken gamer,
What shall we do with a drunken gamer,
Early in the morning?

What to expect:
  • Great combat, complete with the tried and true "social stealth" mechanics
  • A serious take on a historical era that has been sugar coated by Disney n co over the last few years.
  • At least 50% of review sites saying the word "YAR"
Battlefield 4

A year in the games industry would not be complete without at least 1 modern day military shooter with a budget that would make your eyes water and sale figures that borderline ludicrous. With Activision seemingly quiet on its next issue of the "cut and paste" CoD series. EA have begun revving up the hype machine for Battlefield 4. Solid details on multiplayer are non existent this moment in time, however with the release of a 17 minute gameplay trailer I can establish 2 things. One It looks stunning and 2 it's going to be pretty damn special...

What to expect:
  • Huge scale gunfights with graphics and destruction that will make you shout "Holy Shit!"
  • A fantastic multiplayer experience...
  • Me pouring a stupid amount of hours into it, forsaking sunlight and hygiene.

I will be the first to admit that I am prone to Fanboyism and I would expect that there are a number of games I have missed out that may become thee game of 2013, however at this moment in time, Bioshock is without a doubt the odds on favorite to win.

Any idea what else might take the prize? Do you think I'm full of shit? Are you sad and lonely and want to engage me in conversation?

Well leave a comment below and/or tweet me!

Introduction

Ladies, Gentlemen, Internet addicted nerds, Hello!

Due to a lack of things to do and a want of doing something constructive with my life I have begun a blog. To make things clear I'm no journalist, I failed my English GCSE's! So if your a spelling or grammar Nazi I would suggest you keep your comments to yourself.

So what will I be writing I heard you ask? Well I'll basically cover anything I that I feel is worthy of discussion, or something that royally pisses me off... I'm a games lover and a fair bit of my posts will have something to do with them I expect. Also a big football fan and have a wide variety of music (so long as its not some sickening pop band with as much talent as a small bag of rocks.)

I'm not sure how frequent my posts will be, and I have no clue whether anyone will give a shit one way or another but hey, let give it a go!

Rather than me going on and on here are some handy bullet points to let you know what to expect in the future. Get them tattooed to your genitals so you will not forget them!

  • Topics will include games, football, TV and music as well as other general stuff.
  • I suck at English due in part to dislexia and part sheer laziness (so deal with it)
  • Posts from me will normally be short and sweet as I try not to babble
  • I am easily angered and its likely I'll say a fair few vulgar things about people and companies. So please remember all opinions are my own and I really don't care if I offend you.
  • Feedback and thoughts welcome so long as they have a point not just "OMG I DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT (blah blah blah)
Think that's it. You can check me out on twitter (@swift_712) and I would like to get a bit of momentum on this so sharing and feedback would be a great help!

Edit: Oh and as a thank you for any help you may give me, here is a GIF I always laugh at.
