And so, blog post number 1! Apologies for the long gap as I found myself in a vicious circle in which I would get stuck read what I have written, hate it and then delete it...
For this I'm going to get stuck in and start off with a simple statement.
"BIOSHOCK INFINITE WAS AMAZING!"
Now with that out of my system I can tell you that there is nothing I can add to the already gushing reviews from critics and gamers alike. In short, the gameplay is solid and rewarding the story, art style and characters are truly wonderful and I would highly recommend it to anyone I know... Now, with Bioshock already getting a foothold on the coveted "Sam Swift's Most Awesome Game of the Year" award, I will go through all the announce games we can expect in 2013 that may kick Booker DeWitt and co in the nut sack and steal the award away from them.
Here come the challengers!
Grand Theft Auto V
A bit of background for those of you who have lived in a cave or North Korea. Grand Theft Auto is one of the most well know and recognizable game series in the universe. In most part due to its fantastic gameplay and sandbox formula that cannot be imitated with the same level of quality and maturity (put those dildos down Saints Row!) and in some small way its know for the controversy that follows it with every new game released and I don't think this one to be any different.
What to expect :
- Plenty of story missions and lots of things on the side to keep you occupied
- A great script with all kinds of interesting and, in some cases hilarious, characters
- Quite a number of surprises before it's release in September
- A few idiotic and ill-informed parents, most likely American, who will blame this game for all the violence in the world... because it has absolutely nothing to do with drugs, gun control or mental health within the society, OH NO NO NO! (A rant for another time)
Company of Heroes 2
Now this one is a bit of an oddity to me as I never played the original (he says while loading steam to buy it). However, I have a funny feeling that this could be a good outside-shot for game of the year, and most likely the bookies favorite for RTS of the year. It's set in one of the most brutal theaters of war, WW2 Soviet Russia. The developers on this were also responsible for the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War series and the original Company of Heroes, which is according to the interwebs, the highest rated RTS of all time... If that isn't a reason to keep an eye out on this in June then I don't know what is!
What to expect :
- Great mechanics that will keep you on your toes (we don't want soldiers dying from the cold let alone the bullets)
- A fantastic historical setting to enjoy and experience
- Dead bodies - Lots of them
Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag
It's hard to believe that this series is only 6 years old and yet they have created 14, YES FOURTEEN, games (including spinoffs and hand helds.) Thankfully the quantity hasn't affected the quality of the main series, which has produced a fascinating take on some of history's most well known people and eras as well as creating one of the most innovative and brilliant forms of multiplayer I have ever seen. Come November I'll be taking out my enemy's pirate style while encouraging people to sing my new (totally original) song
What shall we do with a drunken gamer,
What shall we do with a drunken gamer,
What shall we do with a drunken gamer,
Early in the morning?
What to expect:
- Great combat, complete with the tried and true "social stealth" mechanics
- A serious take on a historical era that has been sugar coated by Disney n co over the last few years.
- At least 50% of review sites saying the word "YAR"
Battlefield 4
A year in the games industry would not be complete without at least 1 modern day military shooter with a budget that would make your eyes water and sale figures that borderline ludicrous. With Activision seemingly quiet on its next issue of the "cut and paste" CoD series. EA have begun revving up the hype machine for Battlefield 4. Solid details on multiplayer are non existent this moment in time, however with the release of a 17 minute gameplay trailer I can establish 2 things. One It looks stunning and 2 it's going to be pretty damn special...
What to expect:
- Huge scale gunfights with graphics and destruction that will make you shout "Holy Shit!"
- A fantastic multiplayer experience...
- Me pouring a stupid amount of hours into it, forsaking sunlight and hygiene.
I will be the first to admit that I am prone to Fanboyism and I would expect that there are a number of games I have missed out that may become thee game of 2013, however at this moment in time, Bioshock is without a doubt the odds on favorite to win.
Any idea what else might take the prize? Do you think I'm full of shit? Are you sad and lonely and want to engage me in conversation?
Well leave a comment below and/or tweet me!
